In today's economy the dealers are offering some fantastic deals on new pickup trucks too. The Dodge Ram pickups can be purchased at huge discounts off new price and Dodge is even offering a 60 day bring it back if you are not satisfied trial. That sounds pretty good. Other new Ford pickup trucks can be purchased with zero percent interest rate for 60 months which is another tempting offer. Chevrolet offers 0% financing for 36 months and up to 60 months on 2010 models. The other tip that I have is to buy a diesel pickup truck. The diesel not only provides better fuel mileage than a gasoline powered pickup but the diesel engine will run three or four times longer than a gas engine. I have been driving a diesel since 1987. My first was a diesel Volvo wagon. That was a beautiful car, leather interior, all power, and got good fuel mileage. But the best diesels I have owned have been Volkswagen TDI powered cars. My first TDI was a 1997 VW Passat, then I purchased a 2002 VW Jetta wagon. I now drive a 2004 Jetta TDI wagon. My best fuel mileage is 42 in the city and 49.95 on the highway. The very worst mileage I ever got on my diesel was 38 MPG in the city and that was during the winter in Wisconsin. Winterized fuel has less heat energy than number 2 diesel that you burn during the warm weather when temps. are above freezing.
Diesel Pickup Mileage is just one reason to buy a diesel pickup truck. Other diesel strong points include durable, long lasting heavy duty engine, and more pulling power. Diesels get better fuel mileage for several basic reasons. First of all is that diesel fuel has more heat energy per gallon than gasoline and much more than alcohol. The lowest yielding diesel fuel has about 16% more energy per unit volume than gasoline. Depending on the type of diesel that percentage approaches 20% more. To get that power out of the diesel fuel the diesel is compressed to the point that it automatically ignites and here is where even more power is generated in the diesel engine. The compression pressure inside a diesel is much higher in a diesel engine. A typical gasoline engine compression ratio is 7:1 on the very low end up to 10:1 on the high end. A gas engine running 10:1 compression requires high octane gasoline to keep it from detonating. A diesel engine runs compression rations of 20:1 and more. So the diesel develops more power and more torque. The diesel is built stronger to handle the forces required to create this extra power. Another important point is that the diesel develops this higher power at lower RPM than the gas engine. An example being my VW TDI 2.0L Jetta Wagon. It starts to make maximum torque at 1900 RPM. The diesel engine develops more power at lower RPM than a gasoline engine. Add all these benefits together and it yields more pulling power, more hauling power, at lower engine speeds, better diesel pickup mileage, and a more durable, longer lasting engine.
